Easter Monday, 2025 brought us face to face to the Paschal Mystery as we learned of the death of our beloved Pope Francis. It is fitting that he went to meet our Risen Christ and Savior during this Jubilee Year of Mercy which he inaugurated in 2025.
His love for the Virgin Mary led him to pray often in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, especially after he had made some journeys to another country.
His wish to be buried in a simple tomb in this basilica reflects this lifelong devotion to the Mother of the Church.
As we mourn the death of Pope Francis, we will remember him as a man of peace, passionate in spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. His openness and acceptance of all people challenges us to embrace life as he did in the love and service of Jesus. He fully lived out the Gospel of Jesus Christ right to the very end, leaving a legacy full of dedication, kindness, respect, joy, acceptance, love for the least of our brothers and sisters.
Thank you Pope Francis for your grace-filled leadership and for your contributions provided to the Church and to the world. Thank you for the canonization of our foundress ‘Marie Rivier’, in May, 2022, Sisters of the Presentation of Mary.
As we pray for a new shepherd, we ask the Holy Spirit to guide the College of Cardinals who will name his successor.
Thank you Pope Francis for your twelve year papacy. May you rest in peace!
