On Thursday, May 8th, 2025, a new leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Prevost, 69 years old, from Chicago, U.S.A. was elected a new Pope, at the Vatican, in Rome. He took the name of Pope Leo XIV.

The jubilant, energetic crowd in St. Peter’s square burst out in cheers as they first saw the white smoke come out of the chimney at the Sistine Chapel to announce that a pope was elected.  Then the pope came out on the balcony and addressed the crowd by saying, ‘Peace be with you’.
